February 21st, 2010 Cold Laminator – A Unique Way of Protecting Documents

Cold laminators are often used on materials that are heat sensitive. Unlike conventional hot laminator units that use heat to bind the materials. Cold laminators use pressure to mend the edges of the plastic film together.

At present cold lamination can be applied to photos, valuable documents and even ultrasound printouts. There are also various laminating films that are available and can be used depending of your needs. For starters, single sided film is often used for documents that you would want to add some adhesive in the back. Dual sided film on the other hand completely covers the entire document with film thus producing a sturdier case.

There are also magnetic films. These films consist of one layer of plastic and a back layer of magnetic material. Transfer adhesive laminating films are a different story. These encase your documents like a double sided film, but you will find a peel off adhesive in the back. Lastly, over laminate is the type used for store signs, floors and children’s games.

When talking about cold lamination, you can choose from a variety of finishes for your documents. These may be matte, satin, luster and gloss.

Matte finishes are mainly non reflective finish that gives off a sort of granular look. Using this type of finish makes colors rich and alive. This is also the common finish that people opt for. Satin finishes on the other hand gives off a little glare and it usually has a soft sheen on the surface. Luster is also a different factor. When you look at it, you may see reduced glare but have a sort of sparkling effect as compared to other finishes. Lastly, gloss finishes bring out colors and make images more vivid and attractive. It also adds radiance and more definition to photos that are otherwise dull and unattractive.

Lamination is your best option if you have documents, photos or other materials that need to be protected against moist and molds. Actually, this is the most practical way of maintaining important papers. Your laminated documents and photos can even last a lifetime when done properly and if they are well kept. If you own a lot of documents that you want to last a lifetime, getting a laminator machine might be good idea for you!
